The History of Lei Making & Giving
Ancient Hawaiian Origins
Lei giving dates back to early Hawai'i, where they were worn by ali'i (royalty) and used to symbolize status, connection, and respect within the community
A Living Tradition
Lei making continues today as a respected cultural practice, passed down through generations and shared to welcome others into the spirit of the islands.
A Symbol of Aloha
The act of giving a lei represents aloha—love, honor, and welcome. It is a gesture that connects people, whether arriving, celebrating, or saying goodbye.
Crafted from the Land
Traditionally, lei were made from natural materials found in Hawai‘i—flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, and feathers—each chosen for its meaning and purpose.
About us
Our first trip to Hawaii unknowingly changed our lives
My first visit to Maui was in May of 1986. I came for a two week vacation and a badly needed break. I was working on a Psychiatric Unit for veterans with PTSD. Upon my arrival on Maui I felt an immediate peace and I was able to relax and enjoy the beauty of the island. The population at that time was only 67,000 and it felt like an island then. The current population is around 160,000, more than double.
I met some of the nicest, kindest people that I had ever met in my entire life. In L.A. where I came from, when people were this nice it was because they wanted something from you. Here it was just a way of life and the culture. I soon fell in love with the people and the culture and imagined what my life would be like here. When I got back to Los Angeles I started to inquire about moving to Maui. I had an uncle living here so that made it easy for me to make it happen.
In my 40 years on Maui, I have made countless trips to the airport to greet family and friends. Because of the custom of greeting visitors with a lei, I don’t think I have ever greeted anyone without one. I also noticed that other visitors were looking with admiration at me greeting my guest. I decided then that when I retired, I would build a business greeting clients with a lei. I also decided that these clients would be greeted with the same kindness and Aloha that I was greeted with 40 years ago. You can’t come to Maui without being greeted at the airport with a lei. Aloha
